sikhs is a religion im pretty sure

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure exactly what sikhs were but I'm pretty sure it was a religion. I think it might of been the one Akbar created to unite Hindus and Muslims but I'm not sure...

Nicole Gustafson said...

cool, ok thanks. that's what I thought.
Initial contact with Indians by the portuguese-methods of trade- view of cantact?

Lora Persyn said...

SikhISM is a religion. Sihks were the ppl who practiced it.

Lora Persyn said...

What was Din-I-Ilahi?

Anonymous said...

nicole-

the portugese/europeans traded with india at Goa as a big trading spot. along with trade they would look at all the weakenesses of india.is that what u needed?

Lora Persyn said...

Nidhi, di you find Din I ilahi?

Lora Persyn said...

where is everyone?

Anonymous said...

Lora, Din-I-Ilah is just what we learned as the "divine faith" but in islam. Hopefully you can remember the Divine faith created by Akbar.

Yeah what is the practice of the hostage system/atlernate attendance?? Is that what Nidhi was trying to explain?

Also what is the role of the Manchu in bringing an end to the ming??
All I have in my notes is that they took over Bejjing and started the Qing and formed an alliance with the ppl.

****************HELP********`please

Lora Persyn said...

That's pretty much it with the Qing. The ming dynasty was already falling apart so they jsut allied with who was left and gained control of China.

Lora Persyn said...

I'm guessing taht the hostage system ws like, keeping hostages and making strong government ppl live close to the main source of power. As to keep an eye on everyone.

Lora Persyn said...

Did that make sense?

Anonymous said...

sorry guys i was studying for chem. for a sec.

ok so..

lora- din illah whatever is the divine faith by akbar.

ashley- i'm not sure what hostage/alternate is supposed to be.
the manchus came from the north and took over the capital to end the ming dynasty. they created the qing dynasty. they weren't nomads though, remember, they are settled peoples, kinda, but not nomads. it was easy for them to get the peoples trust, cause people wer getting sick of the corruptions in trhe ming, so they wanted someone new.

Lora Persyn said...

Nidhi!
Ur back!
did you find aything out about the hostage system?

Lora Persyn said...

oh sorry, you already said that.
thanks

Anonymous said...

oh yeah, lora, u r right!!

hostage was when the japanese shogun would have the daimyo and his family live near the capital, so that the shogun could keep an eye out for them and no rebellions occured...

Anonymous said...

oops.. i guess i keep repeating what everyones saying...haha! ok, i'll try and be on here, but i need to study for chem...

Lora Persyn said...

peace out. Back later.

How did Akbar treat the Hindus? I cant find it.

Didnt he make divine faith thing with a blen of hindu and islam?>

Anonymous said...

akbar behaved well with the hindus. a proof of that is his act of taking away the jizya.

kind of, akbar combined islam, hinduism, zoroastrianism, and many more religions in the divine faith...

Anonymous said...

Blake: Besides getting rid of the Jizya tax he also decided that the Hindus need to be in High positions gov't.

Akbar also encouraged intermarriage between the Hindu ppl and Muslims

Akbaar also decided that maybe one of the reasons the Hindu ppl are rebelling is because they have no place to worship because there was a ban on building of Hindu temples....so he completely rejected that.

overall Akbar was very tolerant of other relions and faiths.

Lora Persyn said...

nobody here still huh?

What was the initial contact with the Indians by the portuguese ,methods of trade/views of contact???

What were the origins of the Safavid empire? I know there's something about Turks but I forget...

Nelson Boland said...

Ashley-

I think the Portuguese started the trade-at-gunpoint when DaGama reached India, because they lacked goods to trade. Up until that point, trade had always been a peaceful thing but now merchant ships were loaded with guns.

madison archer said...

I think with the hostage system in japan we were supposed to see how it was like what Louis the 16 (or 14 i cant remember) did when he kept the nobles in versailles.

Do we need to know ahything about qing china? I dont have anything in my notes.

Ji Young Chung said...

HELP!!!!!!
---RUSSIA---
What is fix heredity(serf)???

and

why did the tax collection facillitate at Peter's time??

Anonymous said...

Nelson,

the safavid were a military group of turks whose mission was to "purify" and "reform" islam in iran and some of afganistan. i think they made everyone shia...they had the 12 imams thing and ismael claimed to be the 12th imam.

Tyler said...

Does anyone know what the religion of Din-I-Ilahi is?

Anonymous said...

Julia,

fixed heredity is when you r born into a certain position, so if ur mom and dad were serfs, then u would be born a serf.

im not sure what ur asking about the taxes..

Anonymous said...

As said before the din-i-illah is the islamic name for the Divine faith which Akbar created

In the ottoman empire, what was the process of succession?

For the Mughals, what was their economy and what was the impact and contact with Europeans?

And all I have down about the zheng he voyages is that there were 7 expeditions to east africa.

What's da gama?

Sorry for all the questions (i do the study guide and ask yall what i can't find haha)

what do we need to know about the swahili coast and malacca?

Kirsten said...

Nelson since you're not answereing your phone, dont forget the money :p

Does anyone know about the economy of the Mughal empire?
And what's the role of European trading companies in the Indian OCean Basin?

Kirsten said...

In the ottoman empire, as with all of the Muslim empires, did not have a definate line of succesion(i.e. like in other countries how the elder son was the next king, it wasnt specified which son was the sucessor) this was a problem b/c there was constant civil war and assassinations

Anonymous said...

the ottomans didn't have any rules for succession, so their was always chaos.

their economy was high in trade but due to problems inside they were not able to get everything and so they became dependent on european merchants to keep them intact with europe..

Anonymous said...

i think the european trade companies were to be organized in the trade and be able to keep track of all the socieies.

Anonymous said...

the comapnies act as a gov. in regions that they occupy in trade and monopoly. this is what vanessa said.

Brooke Sapp said...

Thanks yall!

So now I need...
to know about the zheng he voyages.

how far did the safavids extend (i know they tried to go into ottoman territory but weren't successful... right?

Manchu?

Da Gama

Anonymous said...

Brooke,

Zheng he made 7 voyages during the ming dynasty. he reached as far as e.africa and he used guns to trade with people along the way.

Safavids were small but they consisted of most of afganistan, and all of iran. they were unsuccessful against he ottomans in the battle of chaldiran and so they began to decrease in power as soon as they lost.

the manchus were from northeastern ASia and they invaded china (ming) and created the qing dynasty, but they weren't nomads...

Da gama was first portugese and all to get around africa all the way to india.

David Douglas said...

a.k.a Vasco de Gama

Brooke Sapp said...

Thank you SOOO much Nidhi!

OK! these are my last two questions lol.
what were the policies of tokuwaga shonate? (mainly with the ideas of social heirarchy)

and...
the overall makeup of the indian ocean trading network?

if anyone needs help, you may ask me =]
since yall have been so helpful =]

great post David =D

Nelson Boland said...

The social heirarchy in Japan completely changed during the Tokugawa Shogunate. The elite class (Samurais and daimyos) lost power due to a time period of peace in Japan, and merchants started started becoming much more powerful, sometimes even wealthier than the ruling elites.

Anonymous said...

Alright,

the tokuwaga shogunate: speaking in the sense of social hiearchy, the shogunate practically dropped the status of samurais and daimyos so that there is no true rebellion adn they also lifted the peasants a bit. they didn't let europe in much because they saw what happened to the philippine (i think). thye got ahead in technologhy cause they used european ideas and made their own things, and the totally destroyed christianity ( tokuwaga hated christianity. if u remember this made them totally isolated but totally ahead of a bunch of other societies.

indian ocean trade network- so overall their was trading of spices, cotton, some silk, GUNS, ivory, some slaves, and a lot more, but it was highly based around guns. the european companies(for example : the east india company) started taking control as the chinese backed out. the islamic empires were too busy getting their empires fixed to notice.

hope this helps!

Anonymous said...

agreed!!HAHA!!

Kevin_Shin said...

What were the elements that led to decline in the Ottoman empire?

Anonymous said...

hey,

i know this means a lot of typing but can someone please give me the 15 examples for the first section (interaction between humans and the environment) cause thats all i have left to do on the chart, and its due tommorrow..i understand if u dont want, but can someone please try? :)

Anonymous said...

Kevin,

the decline of the ottoman empire =
- no organization of who the next ruler was to be.
- corruption in gov.
- can't control all the land they had
-losing of education in the royal families due to cautious dads
-Janassaries became a huge power
- defeat in the battle of lepanto against spanish and they thats why they lost the mediterranean
- they were bullies inthe trade with europe so now europe is paying back
- thougth that whatever was going on in europe was useless, and had no new technologies. ignorance.

thats practically all.

Brooke Sapp said...

THANK YALL SO MUCH! Haha.

Kevin, corruption, gov. control problems, trade loss, stupid rulers (emperors stoppped educating sons so that they couldn't get overthrown)
BUT MAINLY, they did not take the west seriously (as was true with the safavids and mughals as well)

Brooke Sapp said...

Oh and good luck tomorrow everyone! nightynight.

Sapp

UR WELCOME!!! R U GOING?

Ji Young Chung said...

What was the 5th reason for Ottoman decline?????????

--I know it was some Naval battle (Epanto??-i think i spelled it wrong)

what happened and what was the effect???

thanks!

Anonymous said...

NEVERMIND, GOODNIGHT!!!!! GOOD LUCK BROOKE!! so am i alone again now?

Kevin_Shin said...

oh thanks guys~

and jiyoung, The 5th reason was the fact they lost at the battle of Lepanto, which caused them to lose either the Baltic or the Mediterranean

Anonymous said...

oh! my notes say the name of the battle was lepanto but i could be wrong..the ottomans were trying to expand even more i think and the spanish cut then off and even stole back the mediterranean, so that meant they lost land, in that way the ottomans see their first (i guess) loss and from then on it was decline.

Kevin_Shin said...

Nidhi, it DID say Lepanto. but are u sure they lost the Mediterranean? cause my notes says the Baltic Sea. Or is that the same thing? idk, my geography is bad haha

Anonymous said...

do you think we'd need to no about the cossack brigade and militaristic ways of the safavids?

Anonymous said...

thats practically the same thing, i guess, maybe it was both...hmm..

Anonymous said...

i looked it up online and its the mediterranean..

Anonymous said...

anyone wanna help me with the chart?

the battle of chaldiron was between ottomans and the safavids because the safavids were trying to take over some of the eastern part of the ottomans, but the safavids lost andd that completly stopped their growth in land. the safavids lsot because they didn't have many guns and their guns were on the other side of the empire where the war wasn't. so they barely had guns.
