Test Tomorrow and Whapey Award Deadline REMINDER

If you need to discuss the test, you can do it here. I'm reluctantly unlocking the blog so you can speak back and forth. Reluctantly because I want to keep the ballots hidden for Whapey Awards voting, but that won't be possible in the final stretch unfortunately. That being said, the deadline for voting is at 11:59 pm, and I could use some student volunteers tomorrow to help tally the votes. So far only 43 ballots have been submitted, and that's an incredibly LOW turnout... I hope more start churning in. PLEASE DO NOT COPY AND PASTE OTHER'S BALLOTS AS THEY COME IN THIS EVENING... IF I CATCH THAT YOU WILL NOT HAVE YOUR BALLOT COUNTED, AND YOU WILL NOT GET CREDIT FOR A POST. Cheers!

Mr. Prill, just so I have this right, the three steps of the decline of the Ottoman Empire are 1. Can't expand anymore 2. decline of central gov. and 3. territorial decline (breakaways of Egypt, Greece, and Serbia, ect.) Is that right?

jessicafritz said...

Alina, was the first question on here right?

Tyler said...

For number two, what were the nationalist movements within the Ottoman empire?

Alina said...

yea it was right. also remember the loss of revenue, and the reasons why. do u remember part of why the central government was in decline, which also led to loss of revenue?

Alina said...

the nationalism movements for ottoman empire were mostly arab, but also slavic and other minorities. it was because the young turks wanted to push their values onto others.

jessicafritz said...

Egypt mostly. The french sparked it and because Napoleon wanted conrtol of it. That led to Muhammed Ali leading the movement. It was stpooed by Britain because they knew that if the Ottoman's fell, that Russia would fill the power vaccum.

Alina said...

mkay also remember that independant power bases and armies were building in the ottoman empire. these independant ones collected their own taxes, which took away revenue from the central government.

jessicafritz said...

I know that they couldn't defend themselves. Here's what I have in my notes "Can't defend themselves; local armies/provinces start making their own takes.

Alina said...

pretty much. and remember that it was because of the jannissaries that they couldn't defend themselves since the jannissaries didn't want to modernize, for fear of the automatic weapons being to easy to get which could have caused them to lose power.

lydia huh said...

what were the manchu's attempts at reform?

jessicafritz said...

Okay I got it thanks.

jessicafritz said...

Where there any other reforms besides the Tanizimat?

Tyler said...

Thanks!

Alina said...

the mancu reforms were to lower taxes, lower state labor demands on peasants, have public work projects and inspire innovation.

but remember that most didn't work due to rich landowners not supporting them in order to keep power.

Alina said...

before the tanzimat reforms, mahmud the second made reforms to copy european armies and education (including high school), established railroads and telagraphs, establish postal systems, cleaned up istanbul, and got rid of the harems and drugs in the royal family.

jessicafritz said...

Would the Young Turks be connsidered a reform? They launched an attack against Abdul Hamid II and he's replaced by Mehmed V. Rashid (a puppet).

Alina said...

it wasn't really considered a reform so much as a group of radicals, not really considered a reform since they had worked underground. also if u remember once they got power they tried to push turkish values onto others.

jessicafritz said...

Oh right. Thanks :)

jessicafritz said...

Women's stauts changed right? I thought it went up during this time.

Alina said...

prill never mentioned it, but i think it would have a bit. part of the young turks' aims was emancipation of women, but i suspect that it didn't go to the degree that they wanted it. prill went straight to the bit about arab nationalism.

jessicafritz said...

Yea that's what I thought, but I didn't remember him saying anything about it.

jessicafritz said...

The intrusion of Europeans of Islamic heartlands is what exactly? I don't remember anything from that. Except maybe Egypt.

Alina said...

it was mostly egypt, but also the ottoman empire became dependant on european goods. there were way more exports than imports, causing debts. the european products were also cheaper and of better quality, so that affected the livelihoods for the people of the ottoman empire.

Alina said...

roosevelt coronary gave the u.s. the right to intervene in domestic affairs in the western hemisphere in they deomstrate the ability to harm u.s. investments.

the monroe doctine more warned europe of being in western hemisphere affairs, though was used to justify intervention.

jessicafritz said...

What were some of the major reasons for decline of the Qing Dynasty?

Alina said...

the major reasons for decline of the qing dynasty was western penetration, which caused opium to go into the goverment. this caused a decline in the government and revenue, which mostly hurt peasants. the civil service exams also had been corrupted. western penetration also opened up all the chinese ports and unfair treaties due to china's loss in the opium war. the eventual hatred of foreigners led to the boxer rebellion

some people in china then wanted to bring modernization to china, led by sun yat-sen setting up terror cells and led an uprising. this uprising led to the end of the qing dynasty, as well as the dynastic cycle and created The United Provinces of China.

Anonymous said...

For the decline in qing, there was the cheating on the civil service exam, which led to a corrupt government, which led to the gvernment officials not putting money into the public works projects and taking it for their luxury life, which led to breakage of dams, which led to floods, which led to famine, diseases, and banditry, which led to the big population to be hungry and poor (and the pop. kept growing). kinda snowballing here, huh?

china's ignorance to the world and it's opium addiction of the high classes led to fall as well.

Akshay Gopalakrishnan said...

For people like me who forget or get mixed up...Opium Wars occurred in CHINA not Japan....

Two really quick questions. 1st can anyone explain the Meiji Restoration. Also If you get 35 out of 70 on the test tomorrow what score do you end up with?

jessicafritz said...

What are some similarities and differences b/t Russian and Japan industrialization?

jessicafritz said...

Meiji Restoration- a group of the Daimyo and Samurai who are really ruiling things, put a 16 year old in chargeso they could stay in charge; His name is Mushito. He called himself The Meiji.
Changes:
1. feudalism and classes (like Daimyo)=abkolished
2. Japan= divided into prefectures (the new Daimyo class) (like provinces modeled after the French)
3. Try to centralize emperial power
4. Send samuria to the west to get educated on the west and that class is abolished

Lora Persyn said...

What was the status of women like in the ottoman empire?

Lora Persyn said...

Russian industrialization was driven by gov policy. Both societies received free education.

Lora Persyn said...

Also,
What in the world was Cixi?

Akshay Gopalakrishnan said...

I dont really remember mr.prill talking about that but i think that the status was stilll about the same.

jessicafritz said...

weren't they both driven by gov. policy?

jessicafritz said...

Cixi was the Emporess of the Qing Empire

Lora Persyn said...

Wait, Cixi was the last ruler before the overthrow of the manchus?

Alina said...

no, the last ruler was a two-year old.

Lora Persyn said...

Thanks Jess.
I'm not so sure, I have that down as a specific thing for Russia. Japan also had a huge rise in shintoism and a family identity crisis.

Lora Persyn said...

Cixi was the last REAL ruler. She died in 1908, the overthrow was 1911. Internet rules.

Mr. Prill
On the study guide under Japan where it says "Dutch Studies" is it refering to the journies Japanese ppl made to Europe to study thei government systems?

Kailey Carroll said...

coach prill :)
what was the womans status in the ottoman empire and what were the Dutch studies in the Russia and Japan part of the study guide?

Anonymous said...

hey lora,

for the dutch studies i talked about how japan's window to the west was their small trade with the dutch, so the only reason they were a little ahead was due to the dutch bringing in things about the world..

ottoman women's rights rose as the young ottomans and young turks posed changes in the law for women and an increase in women rights.

Akshay Gopalakrishnan said...

What was the Crimean War about? how did it start?

Lora Persyn said...

Thanks Nid-hi

Lora Persyn said...

The Crimean war started b/c Russia wanted to move into the Ottoman empire but faced challenges from the Europeans. It was important b/c it showed how far behind Russia was and led to freeing the serfs.

Lora Persyn said...

back later

Anonymous said...

the crimean war was instigated by russia against the ottoman empire..it was russia's attempt to take some of ottoman lands to expand...the ottomans would have lsot, but the British and the French helped them because even if they hated the ottomans they hated the russians even more...and they didn't want russia to get the land...so russia lost and it started the whole crumbling of russia. (frst attack)

Akshay Gopalakrishnan said...

Awesome and what are "Dutch Studies" referring to?

Anonymous said...

Russian and Japan industrialization:

similarities: -both had the government controlling industrialization.
- both industrialized fast
- both wanted to expand (wanted korea)

differences: - Russia skips a step to industrialization and so it falls because they went to fast.
- russia had many foreign loans and debts.
-Russia had a lot of its own natural resources (raw materials)
-Japan went fast but fulfilled all steps to industrialization.
- japan had its own banking system and gave loans to itself and not from W. countries.
- Japan was low on raw materials for industrialization

Anonymous said...

i said before that i put that japan was able to have a window to the world through stdying and interacting with the dutch...

Akshay Gopalakrishnan said...

Oh sorry i didn't quite catch that....

it ok!

was there an increase in rights of women in qing china? just wondering, since other societis had an increase in rights for women..then again china is totally different..

Anonymous said...

so i guess since cixi was in power that means an increase in womens right cause a woman is ruling the society....right?

Anonymous said...

i think before the Taiping Rebellion women's rights were still bad (foot-binding ,etc) but the rebellion proposed women's rights, soo that might of helped.

Anonymous said...

thanks!

Caleb Johnson said...

I'm not sure about women's rights, but I think she was the one who built the big marble boat, instead of modernizing the navy

Anonymous said...

Yeah Caleb. Cixi did spend alllllll of the funds to industrialize and strenghten the military...and spent on that pointless marble boat for her GARDEN!!!

We also need to remember that she SUPPORTED the BOXER rebellion.

Tokugawa Shogunate anyone??

Caleb Johnson said...

The Boxer rebellion... Wasn't that the one trying to get rid of foreign influence from China?

Anonymous said...

the tokugawa shogunate ruled before the united states came in and threatened japan, so the shogunate gave into the unequal trade treaties of the U.S. people didn't like that so they revolted against the shogun and gave back power to emperor and ended the shogunate.

Anonymous said...

yeah, caleb..u r right.

The Meiji restorations came in after tokugawa

wow that Helps a lot. Thanks Nidhi

ohh and what was the european intrusion into the islamic heartlands?

Anonymous said...

british and french and firt interfered, and they had changes like education (secondary system), women rights, religious freedom, roads, postal systems, effective army, transportation.

Anonymous said...

im going to eat dinner, ill come back later, bye!

Kailey Carroll said...

what was the woman's status in the ottoman empire?

Alec Livaditis said...

It improved during the Tanzimat era because women were given public secondary eduactions

Ji Young Chung said...

in the ottoman empire section

what revolts and changes were there?

and

whats the difference between CAPITULATION and EXTRATERRITORIALITY?

Alec Livaditis said...

capitulations gave Europeans extraterritoriality, so capitulations are more like a mandate or law and extr. is what the Europeans gain

Anonymous said...

I want to make sure on this...

on the conditions for freeing the serfs in Russia , what were the conditions?

I know that they did not have equailty, so they couldnt vote and they had no political voicee

But I also have REDEMPTION PAYMENTS. can someone explain what im thinking?

Taylor Hammond said...

Capitulation is a like broad term but extraterritoriality is a specific form of a capitulation which is were europeans don't have to listen to the ottoman gov.

Alec Livaditis said...

I can't explain what you're thinking... haha. but I can tell you that redemption payments are the payments which serfs had to pay in order to gain land after emancipation; this land was owned by nobles. This ensured that the nobles would not be displaced or angered by the emancipation.

Taylor Hammond said...

European challenges- who?why?

Does anybody know?

Anonymous said...

Blake, im not sure exactly what you're thinking, but im pretty sure redemption payments are when the serfs after being freed had to pay for land and they didn't have money. the reason for this was because Alexander II doesn't want the nobles to lose power.

Anonymous said...

I havent seen this on here yet, but what exactly are KHEDIVES? I cant find anyhting in my notes except Muhammad Ali was and he was a bad spender, but i may be mistaken....

Anonymous said...

Russia (even if not really european): crimean war, etc.

British: helped egyptians revolt, they kinda helped and non-helped them.

Europeans: extraterritoriality, unequal treaties...

Taylor Hammond said...

Serfdom was gotten rid of by Alexander 2 but serfs were not politically free in that they had to pay for the land they received(redemption payments).

Anonymous said...

khedives:they are the turkish viceroys in egypt, that would be unequal to the egyptians and they taxed them alot, a reason as to why egytians revolted.

Taylor Hammond said...

Khedives are the reason for the Ottoma's falling so far in dept because they didn't know how to handle the governments money.

Kirsten said...

What is European support in the Ottoman empire?

Anonymous said...

european support in the ottoam would be the british giving loans to the ottomans for them to try to industrialize

Geena Kim said...

Japanese expansionn?

Anonymous said...

specificially the railroads and mines

Anonymous said...

the Europeans, primarily the British did not want the Ottoman empire to collapse because they were afraid of Russia filling the power vacuum and becoming too powerful. This is what I think European support of the Ottomans refers to

Anonymous said...

Japanese expansion was when the japanese wanted korea for natural resources so they want to conquor and destroy and britian gives them some warships and they bomb korea and force to sign unequal treaties but china wants to reassert their power ------> SINO JAPANESE WAR

Anonymous said...

the British: its holding the plug for the ottoman empire and it brought out all the good stuff like education and rigths.

French: (indirectly) set up french style codes to control system.

Alec Livaditis said...

Kirsten, I think this is referring to the idea that Europeans supported Ottoman's from collapse because of fear of Russian invasion. an example is the Crimean War.

Geena Kim said...

Attempts at reforms?

Kirsten said...

What type of reformist was Lenin? Like was he a anarchist or a radical inteligenista?

Kirsten said...

Geena, what section was that under?

Geena Kim said...

Russia & Japan.

Kirsten said...

Russia: Emancipated serfs. Built trans siberian railroad. Began coal and steel economies. Government behind reforms and industrialization, not middle class business owners.

Japan: Foreign advisers that they kept a close eye on. Government behind reforms at first, but then sold factories and stuff to the zambatuis

Unknown said...

why did the boxer rebellion start?

madison archer said...

What do we need to know about India other than the sepoy rebellion?

India was Britian's experiment for emperialism. It was eventually used as a resouce place to promote the industrialzation in europe

can someone explain marxism in russia? and how it created the bolsevic party?

my notes are not really flowing

Nelson Boland said...

I think Lenin was part of the radical intelligencia, and he formed the Bolshevik party. He was also the leader of a soviet of a big city ( i want to say St. Petersburg). Lenin gained a lot of popularity when he wrote a pamphlet called What is to be done? (excerpts on blog), and it described his idea of how economic revolution should happen and it combined his ideas with socialism/marxism. This idealogy became popular because of the woes of capitalism and work in factories.

RachaelGarton said...

Idk if someone answered this already, but the boxer rebellion started because of Cixi (spelling?) backing the Society of Righteous and Harmonious fists, otherwise called the Boxers by the foreign press. The boxers were anti-foreigners, and basically tried to kill them all and drive them out of China. But they failed reallly badly in Beijing.

also, to be clear, is extraterritoriality a type of Capitulation? or is a capitulation the law?

RachaelGarton said...

also, can someone tell me what khedives are? thanks

Nelson Boland said...

zaibastsus were privately owned companies which were formely government industries but Japan made the decision to sell them to private investors. It turned out to be very successful and they are still around today.
