Vietnam was a major blow against the United States during the Cold War, as it in no way was even a draw. The United States suffered an embarrassing defeat in Vietnam, resulting in a communist takeover of the entire country. The final moments of the Vietnam conflict can be seen quite candidly in the news footage below.

wow people are climbing the walls in order to get out...wait so did the Americans let the Vietnamese people ride with them in the helicopter? Cause i know mr.prill said that they made people fall from the helicopter, but in the video, they were helping them get over the wall.

This is what happens when you invade another country trying to run things your way. No matter how powerful you are, you can't dictate the governments of other countries that need to be left alone. Not only was our invovment with Vietnam a bad idea to begin with, jungle warfare alone prevented the United States from winning the war. Dense jungles, and unfamiliar Vietnamese war tactics annhialated US troops. It was an impossible war to win to begin with. Obviously, if we had already killed nearly six million of their people and they were not showing any signs of letting up, we had no chance anyway.
its so sad how desperate people were to get out of Saigon. what did the U.S do to this place? its so destroyed!! its like the U.S started it and then they left it in a mess!!!
It's unbelievable about the conditions there in the city. Things just thrown around and it's all dissorderly and chaotic. It's sad to think how many Vietnamese died trying to escape. They should have sent a few more helicopters (although I realize how much dangerous it would have been to do so).
I funny it funny that the US is the land of the free and we all have free speech and condemn censorship. I don't see how the fact that the average teenager is probably under the impression that we "tied" in vietnam is not censorship. It is obvious that we got our butts kicked in vietnam and this should be common knowledge for all Americans.

That was absolutely horrible. All of those innocent people tried to escape the horrors that the United States created. If it wasn't obvious before, this clip definitely showed U.S. loss to North Vietnam and communism. It was sad how the U.S. just got out of there as quickly as possible, not really caring for the mess they left behind. Like you said in class, people actually pulling fingers off of the ladder. The least the U.S. could do was provide some aid. Signs of North Vietnam were everywhere, especially with their flags flying over the American Embassy in Saigon. The flag now, red with one yellow star in the middle, is the official. My parents say we don't acknowledge that as our flag. Our flag is yellow with three red stripes. So having their flag wave over Saigon was a slap in the face. Communism was a reality in South Vietnam, which is now just a communist Vietnam.
I asked my grandma about the war and at the time, she was living in South Vietnam and she pretty much said everything was pretty peaceful. She saw soldiers passing by but nothing more than that. There was a lot of fighting out in the roads but she wasn't harmed at all and they didn't try to escape either. But there was a family that lived in central Vietnam that asked her if they could stay there for a while. So after the U.S. left and fighting was "over," everything was all good?
wow. this video was so sad. it makes me look at Vietnam differently now. i used to wonder why Vietnam was so poor and dirty. i remember going there was i was about 5 years old. i pretty much hated it. my family lived in a very old house that was filthy and broken down. i also remember other kids running up to me asking for food. i didn't understand back then, but now i do. my family is also planning on going back to visit either this summer or next summer and when i do go, it would make me think about how the war destroyed so many places. There are some very nice, beautiful beaches so it wont all be bad. I also remember my mom telling me how she left south Vietnam secretly to come to America. it took a while because she ended up living in Singapore for a couple of years after leaving Vietnam and before going to the US. I remember her telling me she had to leave late at night when it was pitch dark, so no one could catch her. They hid up in trees for hours before a private boat came to pick them up.
The flag in the video looked different to me. The old one i remember was yellow with 3 red stripes. then, the one now is yellow with a red star in the middle. but then in the video, it was red and white with a white star in the middle. i wonder when that flag was put up. before or after or in between the other ones.
I think that is pretty ridiculous that Americans still try to say that we won Vietnam when clearly, we lost it bad. We even had to fight our way out of there. And I'm confused on why the Vietnamese wanted to get out...
Weren't they the ones fighting the Americans?
when you take ap us next year miss carroll you'll get more detail on the war, but essentially you've got factions of vietnamese... north vietnam, south vietnamese fighting against the u.s. (the u.s. will refer to them as the vietcong) and the south vietnamese fighting with the u.s.
It's sad to so many people trying to get out of there to save there lives. But i was thinking how come the helicopters were not like shot down? Or were they?
