Aztec-Inca Comparison Essay Discussion

All I can tell you guys is to be ready to compare anything tomorrow. Any aspect of either society is fair game. Three suggestions: (1) study over all notes you've taken over the past couple of days, including that chart that I gave you which is great for comparison essay preparation. (2) STUDY OVER THE RUBRIC FOR THIS ESSAY AND ANY NOTES YOU HAVE FROM COMPARISON ESSAY TRAINING DAY. This is super important because getting the format right is half the battle. (3) Use this blog to talk back and forth with each other to brainstorm comparisons and contrasts. This post is now wide-open for discussion...

i am a little confused with the aztecs. did they have any public service things other than pyramids like streets and things?

Prill said...

sure... look at the layout of the city of tenochtitlan for example. the incas had a more intricate infrastructure though. 25k miles of roads is hard to beat.

i guess you couldn't find those documents on women...

Prill said...

not online, no. the document i was thinking about was a mid-16th century doc written by Bernardino de Sahagun. discussion of the roles of men and women are found in his The General History of the Things of New Spain

so the essay is just on the incas and aztecs and about there societies?

Prill said...

yep.

Alec Livaditis said...

is there a certain codex showing the list of aztec gods

Prill said...

you can look at these links...

of course, none of this is too useful for tomorrow's essay, with the exception of huitzilopochtli perhaps.

what were the different ways the incas paid tribute to the gods? i know one is labor.

Kevin_Shin said...

didnt the incas pay tribute to their gods by animal and agriculture sacrifices? unlike the aztecs who shed their own blood and human sacrifices?

Prill said...

tribute is not paid to the gods miss dang, it's paid to the government. and it's paid plain and simply through labor on land owned by the government and the sun.

Kell Watkins said...

when you say by there societies you mean religion the roads and how they kind of were a like withou meeting each other.!?

Prill said...

i mean ANYTHING... any topic is fair game tomorrow, social issues, politics, economics, cultural contributions, anything is fair game, so know everything.

what type of government did the aztecs and incas have?

Can someone compare the military of both empires? and who made them up? I know some things but can seem to compare this for som reason.

the aztecs had a tribute empire and wanted payments of clothing, jewlery, andd victims for sacrafice. The Incas also had a tribute govt but also had a very organized govt with a strong buraucracy. but both developed in the same way (power vaccum) the incas had clans (Ayullas) and Inca or ruler. The trubutepayments for the incas was labor force

Alec Livaditis said...

Would it be appropriate to say Aztec tribute systems is like feudalism?

the incas had a strong military but it was used by the inca to gin land as a part of respect towards the ancestors, and as a part of the split inheritance.

Anonymous said...

what were the achievements and learnings of the aztec..its on the chart on the back of the notes.

Anonymous said...

did everybody leave?

Anonymous said...

So the Aztecs and the Incas were similar in women roles...and the fact that there were not that many merchants persay because the government in both societies have control over everything??

David Douglas said...

so...i know the aztecs were previously nomads...and then they settled. but what were the Incas before they settled?? (chicken or the egg dilemma?)

David Douglas said...

also...do we have to include documents in our essay???

Abbi Edwards said...

hey Nidhi. okay the social order fot aztecs was Nobles, warriors, preists, merchants( cuz the had them in aztecs but not Incas) and then two classes of commoners. in my notes, it says that they dony move much, and thats all i have!!

Abbi Edwards said...

Oh, the Incas were nomads too!

Anonymous said...

Yea I have a qestion too Nidhi about their achievements. I know all of the Incans achievements (roads, metallurgy (sp), builings ect.) but what offfffffff the AZTECS??

Anonymous said...

Thanks Abbi! Well the gov. of the Aztec didn't have control over all the land...but the incas did.

Theresa Dang said...

what was the Economic (Food Production & Trade) for aztecs like?

Anonymous said...

they had a barter economy, they didn't have dometicated animals...that's all i got in my notes..

Theresa Dang said...

thanks nidhi !(:

michael hennessy said...

what were some cultural contributions of the aztecs?

Prill said...

you are not required to cite documents, but it always makes for a better essay mr. douglas.

Brooke Sapp said...

Michael, I guess some could be:
chinompas (islands build on top of water)
they build causeways to connect Tenochtitlan to the land surrounding the lake.
that's all i really have

Brooke Sapp said...

cool. i can't find my comparison essay notes. can i please have some help? refresh my memory, what goes on it?
Mainly, i need help with the first paragraph

Prill said...

a good thesis is key... remember, you must answer the question, state your position, and give some reference to historical evidence you plan to use.

Brooke Sapp said...

ok so 1st paragraph, answer question, my position, historical evidence.
supporting paragraphs organize by incas in one paragraph and aztecs in another (or something along those lines-that was an example)? and just provide specific historical examples throughout?
also, could you explain the whole 'state your position' concept because this is historical fact, not an essay on my opinions. so do you mean just my interpretation of what was going on at this time?? i don't know...

Prill said...

well it's a comparison essay so your position would revolve what you assess to be commonalities between the two societies and differences.

remember the construction of a comparison essay... you don't want to write it the way you just described because that will make direct comparisons (which you are required to make) next to impossible. let's say one of the things you must write on is cultural issues, then that would be one of your paragraphs and you would have to discuss the incas and aztecs both within it.

Brooke Sapp said...

yes, that's what i meant, i just didn't know what it was over so i didn't know how to describe it to you. Haha. but thank you mr.prill!
goodnight everyone. good luck on yalls essays!
Sapp.

I just read through all of this. Hopefully it will help like last time!

Kell Watkins said...

good luck everyone i was reading all your comments but the women didnt have the same rights as the inca's in the aztecs did they mr p?

David Douglas said...

so in the aztec empire...women were almost equal, but still subordinate. They could own land and work the fields, because it was sorta like Sparta. the women had major roles when the men were away fighting in wars. In Incan society, in theory women were equal, but in practice they were not. The men still controlled every aspect of society, and women, in my opinion, did not have as high roles in society in Inca society as in Aztec society.

David Recchia said...

im looking at this a period before i write the paper and it helped so Thanks
