Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to first of all reiterate the topic of tomorrow's performance final (it will be a comparison essay): Compare and contrast the political and economic effects of Mongol rule on TWO of the following regions: China, the Middle East, or Russia.
A few things...
First, make sure that you are looking through your notes from class discussions (a very important source, HENCE THE NEED TO TAKE GOOD NOTES IN CLASS), PRIMARY DOCUMENTS that I posted on the blog in the middle of November in the archives (you need to focus on the ones describing the aftermath of Mongol invasions because this is an essay on effects, so documents describing actual invasions as they happen are irrelevant), and your textbook for assistance in preparing yourself for the writing task.
Secondly, I have a couple of other primary document material dealing with the Mongols dealings in China that you may find useful by clicking on the links below (NOTE: THIS DOES NOT REPLACE EARLIER PRIMARY DOCUMENTS POSTED, BUT IT DOES GIVE YOU A BROADER VIEW OF THEIR ACTIONS IN CHINA)...
Marco Polo, Description of the World (Read pgs. 82-87. This describes the economic impacts of the Mongols by describing their presence on the Silk Roads especially)
Francesco Pegolotti, The Practice of Commerce (Just read chapter 2. This document also gives a clear look into the Mongols economic impact on China).
Third, again, I can't emphasize this point enough, not all of the documents that I have given you to look at are directly relevant to this writing task, so keep in mind your topic at all times. You are to be focusing on the period after the Mongols took power, so evidence about Mongol invasions and military prowess is irrelevant in this case. No writing about Mongol military trivia tomorrow PLEASE!!! However, evidence of deliberate changes in social, cultural, or religious policies can be counted as political effects (i.e. these changes were consequences of political policy).

Sorry for posting such a long...post...but I still have one more thing to ask, since Europe starting switching to lighter armor and weaponry like bows and arrows around the hundred years wars, and then later learned about gunpowder coming into the Renaissance...does that mean during the renaissance, they didn't have knights in shining armor and maidens crying out in distress trapped in towers by fire-breathing dragons...? So, Renaissance fairs are inaccurate?
P.S. Saw a discovery channel thing on dragons how they COULD exist so...maybe! just maybe...they did? We haven't found remains because aliens abducted the creatures to revive their remains and create a dragon planet! (Just my thoughts...)
mr. gaultney, the idea of the renaissance festival is absolutely absurd, history teachers hate it, because none of what you see down there has anything to do with the renaissance whatsoever. it's really a medieval festival, and even there the historocity of the whole thing is debatable at best. as far as a current events post, i actually plan on putting one up today because obama is announcing his national security team today, and there are some big names on the list. we already have an economic team has of last week, so the cabinet is beginning to round out pretty nicely now, and as expected and as i've been saying since before the election, it's bi-partisan. but i'll have more on that up late this afternoon, early this evening. cheers!

i wouldnt say mongol rule was harsher in china. baghdad was demolished in the middle east, a major trading center in the postclassical era. maybe the monolg rule in persia was as closely enforced as china but it was certainly just as harsh
well i remember that it was stricter in china. in persia they would put native persians in charge, but they would kinda rule over it. in china they wouldn't even allow chinese people to learn the mongol language or marry mongols. i just remember politically, persians still had some power.
miss venick, i would STRONGLY recommend that you do look into the materials I provided regarding the mongols in russia. there is a wealth of documentation out there if you just dig in. i would recommend to everyone not to choose what two you want to focus on until you've looked over everything.

ok i get that the takeovers all kinda went down the same. well it is for russia and persia anyway, i forget about china. i also get that russia's economy was hurt. all i got from the document otherwise was that the guy thought that muslims were treated better. so were things going better in the middle east? i know that the people there still had some power there, since the mongols decided to put some natives in charge.

um...could someone please tell me what happened to the middle east and china economically. i know that russia was affected negatively, whereas europe was affected positively. i'm still not sure about the others though.

China and the middle east had a positive effect. Because of the mongols, China and the Midldle East were opened up to the economic world (Eurasian trading) again.Remeber the Mongols set up the Yam system so trade nicreased. In political means, China had a bad tax system, the merchants were held highly, and the chinese were discriminatedupon. In the middle east, Hulagu Khan (Genghis Khan's grandson) ruled that khanate. He was set up mainly in Persia and there was a tribute system set up with the Mongols. SoPersia and other middle east areas pretty much became vassal staes after a while (until the Mongols fell).

It's like the silk road system. Actually I think it's the exact same thing, just set up after the black plague but I could be wrong. It's a major trading network.

i also remember it being said in another document that the roads were safest under mongol rule. i think china was effect positively by mongol rule, economically anyway. the economy is effect on the silk road because of the yam system (thank you jessica) which had little stations along it to help merchants, soldiers, and other travelers.
i think politically with china they just had complete rule. in persia they let some of the persians rule, getting help from them. in china it was complete mongol rule.
when we are talking about effect, are we talking during or after mongol rule?

ME Political- had a mongol king but they allowed the persians to pretty much rule themselves.

the yam system stuff was in the marco polo documents.
um i think it was really badly affected because of the destruction of baghdad. when that happened, the irrigation was also destroyed. the yam system mostly affected china, the most the middle east was affected was that trade opened up a bit more, but mostly for europe. trade did become a bit easier in the middle east though.

After the Mongol invasion, the political consequence of China and Russia differed in the sense that the Mongols had direct rule over China where in Russia was a tributary state that was self governed; Russia and China share similarities in which they were both having an economic rise. The Yam system and the silk roads were opened up more than ever and Moscow became a major trading city.

If I remember right, two years ago, in second period, I was flipping through my notes, close to a nervous breakdown, I might add, about the performance final, which you DID NOT REVEAL THE TOPIC TO US. politically all i got is that the mongols didn't really care for thje russians so they let them control their own government....i think they had local leaders.
i did look back on the old ones but all of them seem to be about how the mongols invaded them, not the later effects. which ones should i read other thatn the one about russia?
and about china- one thing i found in my notes is that when mongols ruled the yuan dynasty, they eliminated the civil service exams

i agree with sally on the documents thing..
with china economically, the mongols helped with the silk roads. it was safer for merchants to travel, partly due to the yam system, which increased trade. overall that was what the mongols did to help economically was to increase trade.
with the persians, it helped a bit wit htrade because of the greater use of the silk road. on the other hand, the destruction of the cities of course was bad for the economy for obvious reasons, and the fact that the irrigation system was destroyed.

china's economy benefitted more than persia's economy due to mongol rule. mongol rule helped china with trade, which helped with the economy. even with trade in persia, that couldn't quite make up for the destruction of cities and irrigation systems.

yes i would say that persia has a tributaty government. the mongols pretty much let the persians rule as long as they paid tribute. this contrasts to china where the mongols had complete rule.

Would it count as a difference that the authoritarian effects on Russia's political structure were more indirectly caused by Mongols, as Russia was managed by local princes who having depended on the khan became more powerful when the Golden Horde weakened, while in China the Mongols were more direct in establishing a more authoritarian political structure?

so far i have just made two lists, and now im trying to put the pieces together and group them into a thesis statement and two body paragraphs, which i cannot do.
regarding the documents, you have to be able to make inferences and read between the line on some things. for example, in the russian documents, we see evidence of mongols appointing russians to high positions of authority, which although you have to read between the lines, it speaks volumes about how mongols administered the area.

all the info you have seems good miss moon, you'll just have to format it correctly now. remember that it's best to have a paragraph dealing just political effects in both societies you're talking about, and then a paragraph dealing with economic effects in both, that way you will make the direct comparisons easier.
does it seem like i have enough evidence? like most my information came from that one post of the article that robert gypsee posted? and like is that enough like straight facts and the "whys" for my entire essay? as long as now i format it right? ahhhh

miss patel, truly the differences are more impressive between the chinese and persia. however, you also should realize that central government existed in both with a mongol khan over both. the difference is mainly in the administration, where in the il-khanate of persia, the mongols were rather hands off. also, politically speaking, in both cases the mongols are removed and tradition returns. persia is back in 1335, and the ming dynasty resurrects china in 1368.

in fact, if you really want to stretch things mr. hong, one thing that you may want to consider is that because the mongols in the end wrecked the economy, when the chinese regained control the road systems were also wrecked and this is what led the chinese to resort to the sea for trade. just thought i'd throw that out there.

Would it count as a difference that the authoritarian effects on Russia's political structure were more indirectly caused by Mongols, as Russia was managed by local princes who having depended on the khan became more powerful when the Golden Horde weakened, while in China the Mongols were more direct in establishing a more authoritarian political structure?
If it would give too much away to give an answer, don't.
yeah, you could indeed mention the plague as an effect of the new economic setup in china. however miss grayson, you can only mention it in terms of its effects on china. it made it's way into russia in the end too, but the impact was much more devestaing on china.

uh i just read chapter two of "the practice of commerce" and im kinda confused. whos making the trip? i think im kinda getting that its someone from somwhere in russia going to somewhere that has to do with mongols? this is really confusing, but what is this whole thing talking about? the only thing i got is that the way to get to whereever there going, its really safe.

why is there such as shift in focus to having a more centralized political power after the mongol conquest in china and russia?
miss moon, the who in the documents are merchants. the where is china under the control of the mongols (cathay refers to china). the purpose of the doc was to prodvide merchants would need to know before entering a new market. the yam system is the mongol road system.

so i think that ill put that politically, mongols' affects on china and russia are SIMILAR, in a way that they both improved their government.
but im kinda confused on my next paragraph. can it be a difference that the mongols just affected russia and china differently, but still in positive ways? like im not sure if i have this right. i know that in china, trade was increased and made more prosperous, and that in russia, their contacts with other places were limited, and trade was decreased kinda, but still, because of the mongols, their capital Moscow was opened to prosper as a central force in creating the russian state.. sooo im kinda confused about how i can make this a paragraph about differences?

Hey does anyone know how the black plague effected the chinese economically?

all i know about the black plague was that it was caused becuase of the improved trade routes..
and the trade routes were CAUSED by the mongols.. so i guess the plague is like evidence that the trade routes were really prosperous and very effective?
and later it did spread to russia but china was way more heavily influenced by itt
