hey! can anyome explain the role of women during the tang/song periods? :)

Lora Persyn said...

the tang and song periods were when footbinding started. Women basically were just seen as getting in the way.

Kirsten said...

It diminished. Think about foot binding and how it was basically just men wanting to keep women out of the public eye and make sure they couldn't do anything independantly

Alec Livaditis said...

no love for the Uighur article?

AnnaLeigh Easterling said...

thats right! okayyy thanks lora

what were womens roles in Mongolian society?

Alec Livaditis said...

Can we infer from the doc you gave us in the court case pack

(doc 6)

that the Mongols were highly patriarchal

Yooo, Prill,

Sorry, this is off topic but this is the easiest way to contact you :p

2. what are the rules for behavior? I've never even gone to a jv so I have no clue about any of this...
Also, is there a place to download and print the study guide we were given and just might have lost?

thankkks :)

Theresa Dang said...

was there any major difference that we had to know between christianity & islam.
all i have is that christians pray to jesus & that muslims pray to allah(god)

Anonymous said...

the Quran was holy to the muslims while the bible was holy to the christians.

muslims believed in all the prophets (jesus, abraham..etc..) but that muhammed was the last one. the christians believed that the only prophet is jesus.

Theresa Dang said...

ohh yeahhh! i knew that..but i just didnt think of it. Thanks Nidhi!(:

and do you know the difference between islam & hinduism?

angiem said...

Hey guys!
Can someone please help me with the question:

'Explain the relationships that developed between: (Emperor,Shogun,Daimyo,Samurai, and peasants) during the feuadal period in Japan' ?

Thank you!!

Anonymous said...

theresa,
Hinduism is polytheistic, while islam is monotheistic.

Islam says that all people are equal under god, while hindus believe in the caste system.

hindus believe that their relligion is universal, but muslims believe tht they r tolerant of other faiths and even mixes.

Anonymous said...

angiem,

the emperor put a general(daimyo) in charge of military and organization and of land. them the daimyo divided the land and gave it to the samurai(warriors) who divided their land and gave to the gentry to farm on, because they themselves didn't have time to do that...

Theresa Dang said...

great! thanks !

angiem said...

Ohh, i see!
Thanks Nidhi (:

can one of you guys also help me with the question:
'Explain the origins of the schism between the Orthodox Church and the Latin Church' ?

Thanks!

Theresa Dang said...

what was the manorial system in medival europe? & the relationship or the classes?

Alina said...

angiem,

the schism was majorly caused by iconoclasm, when the eastern orthodox church didn't approve of icons so they tried to do destroy all of the, but the western church liked icons since most of the people were illiterate. there were other tiny issues like beards vs. shaven, celibit vs. not celibit, and latin vs. greek, but that was the major one that caused the pope and priest of the eastern orthodox church to excommunicate eachother. the final straw that decided that the churches would be united was when constantinople got attacked by people from western europe during the fourth crusade.

AnnaLeigh Easterling said...

dar-al-islam anybody?

angiem said...

Thanks Alina for clearing that up for me!

Anonymous said...

angiem,

the secular empire was more centralized in the east than the west and the same is true for religon. roman catholics ws very centralized around latin while the east moved onto greek ways. east turned into a secular empire with official church religion while west was more religious because thats all they really had.

Anonymous said...

dar al islam was the "house of islam" or the unifying force of the islamic world.

Nelson Boland said...

The 4th crusade was actually much later than the schism Alina. The schism was in 1054 when the Pope and Patriarch excommunicated each other over the things you mentioned. The 4th crusade happened in 1204, but you were right in the fact that the Catholics and Orthodox Christians would never really recover from that attack and the Christian world would never be united after that. (sorry if I sounded mean)

Anonymous said...

theresa,
medievel europe was jsut like the japanese becaue they also had feudalism. the relationships were practically the same but they were different in that the knights were just for fighting and so they didn't own land but worked for the landlords who gave land to serfs for farming.

Alina said...

theresa,
i'm pretty sure manorialism kinda coincided with feudalism, since it was the lord having power and peasents owing them service. i remember the question used last time on the test about the manorial system just had to do with the fact that it wasn't technologically advanced.

the different classes were all dependent on eachother in feudalism, since there was no central government and the peasents needed lords for protection and the lords needed peasants for food.

AnnaLeigh Easterling said...

gracias

Alina said...

oh i just meant that the fourth crusade was the last straw in the attempt for unity. not the schism. that's why i talked about iconoclasm.

Anonymous said...

no problemo!

Nelson Boland said...

Oh ok. Sorry for confusion

Alec Livaditis said...

Nidhi

Song didn't persecute Buddhists, but encouraged domestic Chinese Confucianism. This was neo-confucianism, which was influenced by Buddhist writings of the metaphysical world.

Anonymous said...

thanks alec,

and sorry for giving u such a hard time in finding it..

Alina said...

i think it was in the later part of the tang period that buddhists were persecuted.

Anonymous said...

Can someone explain the role of mongol invasion in russia.

Brooke Sapp said...

Hey. I have a few questions. ha.

What was the role of Buddism in the Tang dynasty?

(I was absent in the Mongols a lot)
what was their impact on russia and china and the middle east?
And was was the role of women in the mongolian society

Alina said...

confucianism was most supported, but there were some buddhist emporers in the tang period, like emress wu. it was in the later part of the period that buddhists were persecuted, becoming the scape goats for various economic problems since buddhist monestaries couldn't be taxed.

all that was ever said about the roles of mongolian women was that in one of the documents it said that they were responsible for all of the domestic tasks.

Anonymous said...

Brooke,
Buddhism was persecuted during the Tang because the confucians tried to persuade the people and the government that the Buddhists were the reason to their economic problems because they took up the land with their monastaries which the Tang gov. couldn't tax.

In the M.E the mongols destroyed everything and took over and diminished the Abbasid empire.

In china, they also destroyed, but they also made it flourish through trade and had the yuan dynasty which wasn't even chinese.

im not sure about russia either.

madison archer said...

Nidhi,

Russia resisted the Mongol invasion at first so the Mongols slaughtered many people and destroyed many cities. But after that they pretty much left Russia alone as long as it payed tribute. They weren't really interested in Russia. They just wanted a foothold to launch their attack on their main target, Western Europe.

Anonymous said...

thanks, Madison!

Alec Livaditis said...

I was just kidding Nidhi about the bossy thing...

Russia was like a training ground for the Mongols for their, ultimate goal, Europe. They demolished Russia. I mean DEMOLISHED them. It's in one of the recent blog posts. Check out destruction of Vladimir, condition of Kiev (reduced to 200 houses, in which they made all 200 househoilds slaves)

Anonymous said...

thanks, alec...but it did sound mean!

Anonymous said...

i gotta go eat..see yall in a couple!

Kevin_Shin said...

What was the impact of Islam on Northern India?

What was the major impact of the Delhi sultanate on northern India?

KEVIN!
irrigation, fast ripening rice, backing system (banks, paper money, check.)

there's a lot written in my notes.
I think the main one was the grand canal though.

Sapp

Brooke Sapp said...

oh yeah and what was the importance of Justinian?

Anonymous said...

is this right that the emporer in japan did not have really any power in the midevil period??

Theresa Dang said...

i think so taylor. that was what i was thinking. he was just there as an icon and other people did the ruling.

Anonymous said...

Justinians most significant and long lasting political achievement ws that he codified the roman law... and he rebuilt the whole city.

Brooke Sapp said...

yes taylor that's right

Brooke Sapp said...

Thank you Nidhi!

Anonymous said...

yeah the shogun did most of the ruling..

Nicole Gustafson said...

alec, the website will not come up. :(

jessicafritz said...

Does anyone know some cultural developments in the Islamic civilization during the Abbasid empire?

Theresa Dang said...

what was the importance of Marco Polo?

Anonymous said...

jessica,

i think this is it:
-veiling
-mathematics
-usage of some greco-roman texts for education.

Anonymous said...

theresa,
marco polo was the one who traveled to the Mongol region and stayed with Kubalai khan and he always praised them. thats all i no that has to do with the marco polo.

Anonymous said...

Theresa, look on page 469 in the textbook there is a document and it says that he traveled extensively through C Asia and China in the 13th century when the Mongols dominated

Does any one know what did the Byzantine Empire contribute to society?

Anonymous said...

hey alec,
the webpage still doesn't work

WaseemR said...

hey what was the manorial system in western europe?

Anonymous said...

waseem,
the manorial system was the system in which the lords and serfs lived on a piece of land, called a manor, on a deal that is part of feudalism. a manor consisted of forests, farms, and lakes(bodies of water). they also had knights guarding the manors.

Theresa Dang said...

sweet! thanks

Anonymous said...

can someone explain the byzantine bureaucracy?

WaseemR said...

what major impact did the delhi sultanate have on northern india and islam's impact on northern india?

WaseemR said...

byzantine bureacrcy was under the power of one central ruler, the emperor who had power also in religion

Anonymous said...

funny! i was just looking over that!
k'
the sultanate brought problems cause evry sultan that was muslim would get assasinated and so they had to place an hindu head. all the temples and monastaries were destroyed by the invaders.

islam wasnt taken in at first, but when the sufis came they tried to get people to convert by changing stuff in the islamic religion, they tried to combine the islam and (hinduism and buddhism). it still couldnt work that much so they didnt have that many converts to islam.

Anonymous said...

oh yeah..well i thought there would be more to that but i guess not, thanks anyhow!

Unknown said...

anyone help with comparing europe's feudalism with japans?

Anonymous said...

hey delany,
look up in the previous posts and they say it all but just for the heck of it:
Japan- the emperor put a general(daimyo) in charge of military and organization and of land. them the daimyo divided the land and gave it to the samurai(warriors) who divided their land and gave to the gentry to farm on, because they themselves didn't have time to do that

Europe- medievel europe was jsut like the japanese becaue they also had feudalism. the relationships were practically the same but they were different in that the knights were just for fighting and so they didn't own land but worked for the landlords who gave land to serfs for farming.

Ankur Shah said...

hey nidhi, i have in my notes that the byzantine empire supplemented their central government with an intricate bureaucracy.

Anonymous said...

ankur,
dont use big words with me..please..but thanks!

WaseemR said...

what were cultural impacts of the Islamic Abbasid empire?

Anonymous said...

waseem,
its up in the other blogs ahead, but here it is:

i think this is it:
-veiling
-mathematics
-usage of some greco-roman texts for education.

Anonymous said...

Kiev was really important for trade and slavic people right?

WaseemR said...

yah keiv was like the third rome, received a lot of cultural influence from the byzantine empire, the russian princes adopted byzantine form of christianity and later on modified it to there liking, and yah it was a major trading center in russia, but got totally destroyed by the mongols

Anonymous said...

about the dehli sultanates,
what else is therethat might be important to know onthe test?

Anonymous said...

thanks, waseem, uh..where did the vikings come from again, guys?

WaseemR said...

vikings camme from the western russia area, more important thing to know is that the mongols caused them to flee into the northern roman empire causing its decline

Anonymous said...

oh..wait..N.Roman empire, but wasnt that a long time before the vikings?

Kevin_Shin said...

oh wow... i left my study guide at the library.....

thats gotta suck!well alot of it is on here..

Smurphy said...

this may be a stupid question, but what was the importance of marco polo's travels?

WaseemR said...

i don't think the vikings are going to be on the test coach ellwanger onlly related them to the cause of the decline of the roman empire, so you might want to remember that

Anonymous said...

marco polo traveled to where the mongols were in china and he visited Kubhalai khan, and always praised the mongols even i he was from europe. it just shows that there was someone else that thought the mongols were awesome.

Anonymous said...

oh ok...ur in coach ellwangers class? well, thanks any ways..

Anonymous said...

i asked a question ahead about the bantus and their political system..can someone please answer it? also the major trends in the song dynasty?

Smurphy said...

and thats it? like do you think we have to know like all the places he traveled or only his travels that relate to the mongols?

Anonymous said...

only the travels to mongols cause thats all we really talked about with marco polo...i dont remember talking about him with anything else..

Anonymous said...

so...who's there now?

Anonymous said...

anyone wanna answer my questions before? oooh..i get the 100th post!
yay!

Smurphy said...

okay, yeah cause i only remember the relation to the mongols, and then when we had the trade unit we talked about his travels a little bit when we also talked about ibn battuta's travels, too.

and thanks!

Anonymous said...

u r welcome!

Anonymous said...

i guess nobody is here..so i'll go and sleep...good luck!

Kevin_Shin said...

the bantu's were a stateless society which was ran by kinship groups or age groups,

Anonymous said...

Some people are still wondering about feudalism in Japan so here is what i got: Its all based on loyalty

Shogun at top

Samauri/Daimyo- (who are wealthy land owners with military power) half noble half warrios, but not foot soldiers, they call the plays on the sidelines

Lesser Samauri/Vassals- foot soldiers get land from Daimyo in exchange for military service

Peasants/Genin- work on land

Based on land for loyalty (Bushido); equivalent to the European Chilvary

If they fail to do job they most likey will committ suicide

Anonymous said...

Waseem, the 3rd Rome was not Kiev

1st rome- Rome
2nd Rome- Constantinople
3rd rome- Moscow

Kirsten said...

And you wonder why i miss this question on the test mr. Prill!

I'm positive on this blake: the third Rome is Kiev

Prill said...

no, the third rome is most definitely moscow... however, this is not till the mongols are removed and we have not yet discussed this in class. your book may have made mention of it though.

Mr.Curtis said...

By the 16th century, Russians had begun to think of Moscow as the third Rome.

reading quiz question

Theresa Dang said...

what was the difference between kiev & moscow? cause to me there are the same thing...kinda

kiev- influenced heavily by Constantinople & was most important in the early rise of russia.

moscow- third rome.

anything else?

Prill said...

here's a major difference for you: THEY'RE NOT THE SAME CITY
