Making History One Day at a Time...

Well AP World scholars, I hope you all enjoyed a truly historic week last week. On Thursday evening, Barack Obama became the first African-American to accept a presidential nomination from a major political party in American history. On Friday morning, Sarah Palin became the first woman to become a vice presidential running mate in the Republican party. In addition to that, Thursday evening, for the first time in NGHS AP World history, we had a study session (and a very productive one at that) in the blog-o-sphere. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, these are truly exciting and historic times! As you all know, the first unit test for us is scheduled for Wednesday, so I hope to have yet another online study session for that as well. Log in at your convenience, ask questions, I'll answer them, and read and see the answers to the questions of others. All of you should have a study guide that you picked up on Friday after your essay. If you forgot to pick one up, you can click here to download it. My suggestion is to work on it this long weekend and come in on Tuesday with questions, and of course this blog is now open for any questions you may have now as well. Again, please post any questions you have to the blog and I will reply so that everyone can benefit. Remember, if you have a question, chances are half the class has the same question you do, so don't feel shy about asking. This blog worked fabulously in helping you all prepare for your essay on Friday, so let's keep this going. Also folks, for your surfing enjoyment, I have also included some new links to websites of global interest on the side for you to check out. Please ladies and gentlemen, make sure you are keeping up with the news. On a national level, keep an eye on the Republican National Convention this week, and really the campaigns of both parties as we inch closer to what promises to be a historic November 2008, one that your children will be studying in their history classes (that's a guarantee!). Also, keep an eye on Hurricane Gustav as at prepares to menace the gulf coast and as the people of New Orleans flee their city yet again (just a week after the 3rd anniversary of Katrina). Also, on a global level, this drama with Russia and the aftermath of its invasion of Georgia, with strong words coming from the British this weekend, so continue to follow that too as history continues to unfold in that region of the world as well. Finally, if you are wondering about progress reports and your grade in the class, I'll send those home on Tuesday as I am working on completing the grading of your summer movie assignments and Human Web exams to give you the most accurate grade possible. If you're waiting on my mass email with more info on the China or Peru trips, you'll have to wait until Tuesday because I forgot all your email addresses that you submitted to me on my desk. Well, enjoy the rest of this long weekend, study well, and see you all Tuesday! Now, your questions [EDIT: I WILL BE AWAY FROM MY COMPUTER FROM 7PM TO 10PM TODAY (TUESDAY), HOWEVER, I WILL KEEP THE BLOG OPEN AND TAKE THE MODERATOR DOWN SO YOU CAN ASK EACH OTHER QUESTIONS WHILE I'M NOT AROUND. JUST BE RESPONSIBLE ABOUT NOT PUTTING ANYTHING EVEN REMOTELY INAPPROPRIATE UP]...

Yea I was happy that John Mccain picked Sarah for the VP nominee. I'm not a fan of Obama personally so I didn't even bother to watch that acceptance speech of his.
What I don't get though, is that all of the entertainment shows only talk about Obama and are trying to make him a celebrity more than a presidential candidate. They hardly ever say anything about Mccain and that's really unfair. I think that they do it because mostly, not all of them, but mostly all of the people in Hollywood are democrats and use the power they have over people to make them think that Obama is the right choice. It's all unfair. I mean, People magazine had this whole issue on the Obamas and stuff. What I want to know is where's John Mccain's issue? It's not fair to Mccain or republicans and they need to pay as much attention to him as they do Obama. I mean, if the guy gets a haircut, everyone freaks out. It's ridiculous.

I understand that the Neolithic Age brought farming/agriculture. That seems like the most important thing about that age. but what are some other things we might need to know about it. Another thing..do we need to remember super detailed stuff like dates and stuff like that?

Anonymous said...

This isn't a question but the link i'm putting here is comparing and contrasting Egypt and Mesopotamia. This might help people who might have forgotten, since it was in the beginning of the unit.
http://history world.org/egypt_and_mesopotamia_compared.htm

there is a space between history and world.

Anonymous said...

there is a dash between the history and the world, not a space..my bad..hope it helps

just so you all don't get the wrong impression, this post wasn't designed to stir any political controversy, but instead to encourage you all to keep a close eye on the news as history unfolds in the next 2 months for both sides of the political aisle. these are truly interesting times. you will be happy to know miss fritz that (1) i will never preach my political views on this blog or in my class, and (2) if i talk about the obama/biden campaign i will be sure to talk about the mccain/palin campaign alongside it.

miss patel, to quickly answer your question, with regards to the neolithic revolution, remember the key of it being the "birth of farming" and also the major impact (settlement which leads to agricultural surplus which leads to specialization of labor, leading to social stratification). the test questions are never super detailed, but more big picture. focus on themes and comparing societies over time and place. i will NEVER test you on dates. tambien, thanks for the comparative website, i'll be sure to check it out.

Mr. Prill I have a question about the study guide.
Under the section "Claasical China" it says "The idea of a dynasty, the dynastic cycle, madate of heaven, and major characteristics of the first 4 dynasties in Chinese History."
Are we supposed to define the mandate of heaven and the dynastic cycle and then just descrbie the first 4 dynasties?
Also, under Neolithic Rev. and River Valley Civilizations" it says to tell the differences and simliarities between Mesopotamia and Egypt. Does that apply only to politics, religion, economy, ect. or is it just saying to describe ALL of the diffs/sims between them?

Anonymous said...

Thanks! That's a relief!

Prill said...

miss fritz, yes you will need to be able to define both the dynastic cycle and the mandate of heaven. however, on my tests you will also find that it's important to know definitions for the purpose of applying your knowledge to big picture questions. in terms of the first four dynasties, especially focus on the qin and han. of course remember that the qin dynasty unified china for the first time, and this was done based on legalist principles. additionally, remember the han dynasty as a strong centralized government but more based on confucian principles and centered around a large bureaucracy not simply one emperor. hope that helps a bit.

Hi, quick question. I have a worksheet from Mr. Ellwanger's class and I don't know if you gave it out as well, but it is a comparison sheet. It asks for labor systems. What is that? Like slaves for debt or something?

-------------------------
I was also wondering if anyone is interested in doing a sit down, meet up at a place, study session Tuesday night. And if any of those people have a labtop, to bring to we are still connected to the blog. Please let me know!

Prill said...

yeah miss gustafson, labor systems deals largely with coerced labor in this case.

Nicole Gustafson said...

Wow. Thank you Nidhi! You just saved me a lot of time! :D
I would suggest everyone to go to the website Nidhi posted.

On the part of the study guide where it asks for for characteristics of a Neolithic society and then it asks for the impact of the Neolithic revolution, what would be the difference between the two.

you already said the characteristics of it, so would the impact be:

food supplies became more reliable as people domesticated animals and plant seed. Social and political systems developed in the settled societies.

jessicafritz said...

Okay thanks Mr. Prill! That helps a lot.

Prill said...

mr. edwards... the difference would be (1) you need to be able to describe what neolithic societies looked like, and describe how they were different from previous paleolithic hunter gatherer societies, and (2) explain the importance of the neolithic revolutions. a good question to ask yourself when trying to assess the impact is: "what's the big deal?"

Nicole Gustafson said...

Is is a state of Moksha, like enlightenment? Or is Moksha a place, like heaven?

Prill said...

well it's not heaven in the christian sense of the word, and it's not quite enlightenment in the buddhist sense of the word. quite simply, moksha is achieving union with brahma and the final escape from the wheel of life and death (samsara). remember the illustration of salt and water from the upanishads when trying to remember how moksha works.

jessicafritz said...

Mr. Prill, I've been looking for factors in the development in classical China and can't seem to find what exactly it is that I should know for the test.

Nicole Gustafson said...

So are you still considered human? Are you still in a physical body, a servant of, you just have a complete feeling, similar to nirvana? or is it meaning your soul leaves and connects you to Brahman, which is not a god, but a universal spirit? Or does it mean once you die you are one with the universe, one with Brahman?

Prill said...

miss fritz, first keep in mind that it was the qin family that finally established a united china, sending the classical era in china into full swing. keep in mind that this could have only been done with a powerful military. but where did the qin family get wealth needed to fund such a military? the key to their wealth would be the main factory in development, so what was the key to their wealth?

Nicole Gustafson said...

jessica, go to the website Nidhi posted, and click main menu or return to home button at the bowwom of the page. when you get there just type in what you are looking for at the search engine at the top. It will list papers of anything they are on your topic-and they are very helpful!

Prill said...

miss gustafson, the physical world is merely an illusion. only brahma is reality. just like the salt disappears to the eye in water, yet still exists is the same that takes place when the human becomes unified with brahma.

jessicafritz said...

OKay. That helps. Thanks guys :)

Nicole Gustafson said...

ok, thanks :)

I have a question: on the study guide, under Neolithic revolution and river valley civilizations it says "Judaism." I don't have any notes over Judaism so I was wondering what we needed to know about that. Re-reading my textbook notes, I think that it is referring to the Sumerians because they were polytheistic but at the same time, the Jewish religion isn’t polytheistic, so I am not sure. I may have everything completely wrong.

Prill said...

miss kaye, when asking about judaism i am referring to the religion, culture, and society of the hebrews that eventually settled in palestine. what would especially be important is their religion being the first instance of a monotheistic religion in world history. this will obviously contribute the creation of christianity and islam later. if you don't have much in your notes on this you can read up on it a bit more on pgs. 45-48 of your textbook.

Alec Livaditis said...

So let me get this straight, Hebrews were originally from Judah, modern day Palestine. They mrgrated to an area between Mesopotamia and Egypt. Then under the leadership of Moses some of them called the Israelites, which developed twelve tribes, migrated back to Palestine. Eventually they left Palestine, to have a Mesopotamian monarchy which united the twelve tribes. Then Asyrians brought down Judah, then shortly after Babylonians conquered the Asyrians and Jerusalem was destroyed.

Is that right?

Prill said...

mr. livaditis... almost but not quite. the hebrews originated in mesopotamia since the biblical partriarch abraham was from the city of ur. over time, the hebrews will migrate into modern day palestine. as the story goes, the hebrews are enslaved to the egyptians in time, but end up migrating back to palestine in the end, and over time an established monarchy is set up there in palestine. the assyrians destroyed, not judah, but the northern 10 tribe kingdom of israel sometime after the kingdom split. the southern two tribe kingdom, or judah, was later destroyed by the babylonians, and that is when jerusalem was destoryed. hope that clarifies things for you. however, for test purposes, you only need to familiarize with their religious beliefs.

Kell Watkins said...

yea nihidi how did you find that... and i have a filling if u all study the study guide it will be some what easy... and mr prill when it says (under classical china) the impact of tha rivers is it saying lyk indus river valley and tha han river how the han river flooded on "schedual"?

Kell Watkins said...

haha and mr prill do u not knw how funny u look with your head cut off on the puter lol

Prill said...

mr. watkins... impact of river valleys refers to how the rivers of their respective societies shaped those societies depending on their overall character and behavior. i don't know of a han river though, you may want to check that.

I know this has nothing to do with this blog but i was wondering if anyone would be interested in doing study sessions before the tests. Really discussing the topics with other people really help me understand what it is all about. If anyone is interested just reply to this.

Anonymous said...

I was interested in anyone wanted to do a study group or something tomorrow like Nicloe G. said earlier, but noone replied yet so im just bringing it back up.

Anonymous said...

Hey delaney, i just posted something saying like that, but yours wasnt up yet! But anyways i am interested

Anonymous said...

The review session might be a good thing but where and when are we gonna have it? I'm sorta interested, cause talking about the work really helps me to remember stuff, im pretty sure thats the case for most people. Kell, I got it off the internet, does the site work guys? the papers help compare and describe alot of the stuff we need to study.

Nicole Gustafson said...

Hi! ok for a study session where is everyone ok with meeting? my parents want it to be earlier in the afternoon, say 5 or 5:30 to 7?
I VERY much want to have one!

Anonymous said...

Where r we gonna meet? the time seems ok..

Nicole Gustafson said...

ok nidhi, is barnes and noble convient? or do u know of anywhere else we could meet? barnes and noble at the mall is the classic place. ive talked to a few other people who are interested, so I bet I can advertise this and get a lot of people to come.

Isn't it a bit too loud..i mean and its a bit far away too..even if its a bookstore it probably is still loud..i guess we can find a place thats quite in there..but im not so sure that i can get there..how bout we have it right after school..in some class so that no one would have to worry about a ride or something..

Nicole Gustafson said...

hey, im sorta confused on how the preists became the top of the cast system, did they just ramdomly decide they were the best?

Prill said...

well, one rarely just randomly decides he is the best. the rise of the brahmins in india largely parallels the growing importance of religion in society. of course, the real kicker is the hymn of purusha in the rig veda that essentially puts the priests at the top. ironically, the text was written by priests. the upanishads (also written by priests) further solidfies this structure. this is hardly random though. but it is obvious that as the priests increased their power in society and so themselves as more important and significant as a result, this was a good way to justify and solidify that role.

cori kempshall said...

ok, im sorry but like Jessica Fritz i am not a fan of Obama's either. He tells people he has these really great ideas and stuff but in reality how are we going to get all that great stuff??? Higher taxes and no body wants that.....okkkkkk! lol. And obama wants to legalize pot! thats where a lot of his votes are coming from are the pot heads!!! And everyone is freaking out about John Mccains vp Sarah Palin's 17 year old daughter being pregnant and stuff, and who cares. People have to make the sad realization that thats not an unfamiliar or unpopular thing anymore. And it actually makes her seem real to me. Politicians are always made out to be so perfect and this shows that theyre not. John Mccain would totally get my vote if i could vote, lol. and i was driving down the road the other day and i saw this really funny bumper sticker that said we dont want another osama, dont vote obama or chelsea's mama (hilary clinton) lol. vote john mccain!!! No offense to anyone who is an obama fan i just have a VERY different view on politics than they prolly would.

RachaelGarton said...

I agree with Cori on the whole Obama thing. Whenever I watch him, he promices all of these great improvements to society (alternate fuel, tax cuts for 95% of americans, etc.). But, I have yet to hear him say HOW he's going to do any of that. I think I'd like to hear his plan on how he would propose to make alternate fuel a part of America's economy. And isn't the majority of America pretty poor. Not compared to the rest of the world of course, but compared to the upper-middle class and upper class? So, the tax cut he's talking about probably wouldn't even benefit the families of most of the students here at North.
I don't really know about pot though... I don't really care one way or another on that. Smoking weed is actually better for you then smoking cigarettes. And the majority of druggies I know do other things, like Oxy or Riddalen (sp?), not pot.

RachaelGarton said...

Oh yeah, and does anyone have good websites to use for studying?
Nidhi, maybe I'm a moron or something, but I can't get your website to load...

Stucke Family said...

Hey I know we have to know about some texts but what exactly do we need to know about each one?

Stucke Family said...

With regards to the president nominations, I think that it is quite ironic that John McCain choose a girl for his vice president. I just think that it seems like he was doing it more for a shot at winning since Obama could potentially be the first black president that he wanted to have the first female vice president.

Prill said...

in answer to your question miss stucke, before i run out the door here, having read the documents already, be able to draw conclusions about their meanings, especially the bhagavad gita, the hymn of purusha in the rig veda, and confucius' analects. hope that answers your question.

Ashleigh Stewart said...

I think that it is really good that Obama said that this is about the election not about Sarah having a 17 yearold daughter who happens to be five months pregnant.

Katelyn Niemann said...

okay, so i'm not gunna lie, i haveb't read most of the posts yetr, just the top and a few above this, so when i say i agree with Jessica Fritz and u had the same thing, i'm srry. anyways, why DOES obama get all the attention. my little sister's watching Nickalodian RIGHT NOW and it's showing a comercial about deligates who PLAINLY say that they are voting for Obama. all the mag.s show obama, cover and all, but WHERE IS MCCAIN?? i mean, yes, we have the freadome of press and speech, but could they at least TRY to make it a little more equal? i just asked my 7-year old sister who she thinks the president will be and she said" the black guy" and we are not suportive of him, yet that's all she knows BECAUSE THE PRESS IS BIASSED! grrr. stupid press!

oh! and btw, if i could vote, i would totally vote for Mccain JUST FOR a WOMAN VICE PRESIDENT!!! i bet there are many out there who think the same!! i'm pretty sure i've gotten the word out how i think about woman's rights! ;)

Anonymous said...

What are the major economic issues in classical China?

Nicole Gustafson said...

Hey Nidhi, u weren't there?

the major economic issues I'd say are agriculture-socially with all the peasents, trade, being attacked by nomads....and economies crashing...

Nicole Gustafson said...

What were the significance of Aryan invasions in India?
gov. collapsed? or new rulers? unstable economy/gov?

Andi Braemer said...

i agree with Katelyn Niemann. it seems that they are doing all this press only on obama. i personally would like to see mccain win, but with his minimum press, it seems that obama will win. and obama could possibly win because he would be the first black president but mccain would have the first woman vice president..
it seems to be a pretty close race between woman and black people..

Caleb Johnson said...

Well, I think it is kind of good that Obama is getting all the press. That way all the dirt gets dug up on him, and we find out more about his screwy campaign.

Zhou dynasty...remember that they gave freedom to do anything for their regions. They had regions so then the regions began to fight to take over. That was the period of Warring states. Qin was one of those regions that took over and ended the period of warring states.

As far as Epic Ages and Vedic Age

I think that the Vedic Age is the period before the Aryan religion became today's Hinduism. There was no way the lower varnas could obatin moksha in their next reincarnation, and the priests were in charge and were needed for rituals in order to obtain moksha.

I think the Epic Age, is the reform triggered by Buddhism to create today's Hinduism. in the bhagavad gita (Part of the Mahabharata) it focussed on the idea that any caste can have a chance at moksha if they do their dharma or duty. The Ramayana was used to teach lessons and decreased the power of priests and their rituals.

Alexandra Kaye said...

and then, Judaism was the first monotheistic religion, and in my notes from class, it says that the Phoenicians were the first to practice monotheism. Does this mean that the phoenicians were hebrew and they were the first to practice Judaism?

Alexandra Kaye said...

Thanks Kylie, i was confused because he put it with COnfucianism and daoism which are religions, i am pretty sure. and jessica, you took the words right out of my mouth. Although, i do remember one thing Mr. Prill said: Egypt was had no millitary system unlike civilizations in mesopotamia because Egypt was not attacked by other civilizations because of the physical barriers around Egypt that blocked other people. (although, eventually the civilizations found a way around this and Egypt was attacked) As opposed to Mesopotamia, which had a very strong military becasue they were rich and were attacked often.

Kell Watkins said...

pretty much i wonder if we ask more questions more in third period!!!! but thats right i remeber that jessica

jessicafritz said...

yea that's what i thought. Because I knew that Egypt was almost never attacked so they didn't care about having a strong military because of their geographic situation. But like Alexandra said, people eventually found a way around it. That is probably one of the biggest differences b/t the two aeras I would think....

Alexandra Kaye said...

From my notes, it looks as if the vedic age was before agriculture and the Epic age was a more settled society because of agriculture and that's when the patriarchiacal society started but i could be wrong.

Kylie, Judaism is a religion and it was the first monotheistic religion.

The Mandate of Heaven was a political-social philosophy that served as the basic Chinese explanation for the success and failure of monarchs and states down to the end of the empire in 1912 CE. Whenever a dynasty fell, the reason invariably offered by China's sages was that it had lost the moral right to rule which is given by Heaven alone. In this context heaven did not mean a personal god but a cosmic all-pervading power. Most historians today agree that the theory the Mandate of Heaven was an invention of the Zhou to justify their overthrow of the Shang. The king, after all, was the father of his people, and paternal authority was the basic cement of Chinese society from earliest times. Rebellion against a father, therefore, needed extraordinary justification.

Kell Watkins said...

im sorry i ddnt mean han then who was it? nidhi

jessicafritz said...

No Qin Shi Huangdi was apart of the "Qin" dynasty...hence the name. He was the first emperor of China

Alexandra Kaye said...

were the phonecians the same thing as the hebrews? cuz i don't think that they are.....and thanks, got it now.

madison archer said...

Actually nidhi the preists were called Brahmin. Brahma was the god and brahman was the concept of becoming one with brahma. Its pretty confusing.

Alec Livaditis said...

Alexandra, I think you are confusing Vedic with Paleolithic (before agr.) and Epic Age with Neolithic (Rise of agriculture)

And Qin didn't have bureacracy, the "governors" were under very tight control. Remember they had to come to the palace regularly.

jessicafritz said...

I'm not sure about the phoenicians...
here's a link that looks pretty helpful
http://home.cfl.rr.com/crossland/AncientCivilizations/Middle_East_Civilizations/Phoenicians/phoenicians.html

Kylie Jayroe said...

raccording to pg.48-49, the phoenicians were not the same as the Hebrews. They were canaanites and their land was canaan.

Anonymous said...

right! i didn't see the a in Brahman....so brahman is is the same thing as Brahma, just that people spell it differently. sometimes the"n" is silent in Indian words, like how Ramayana is spelled with an "a" in the back, you dont say it with the a, trust me i know that, im indian....sorry about the Brahman thing totally didn't read it right!

madison archer said...

oops...what I said about brahman isn't really true. Brahman isn't really becoming one with brahma, its the force that connects everyone to each other and to brahma. Its almost the same thing but its a little different.

tori_freedman said...

a bureaucracy, according to my notes is "a large group of governing peoples" or "large governing body". (bascially, many people in charge of running the gov't rather than one emperor, similar to checks and balances.)

Anonymous said...

The phoenicans were people in the area a bit above modern palestine. they developed a writing system with syllabals and phonics. they dont have much to do with Jews i think..

Alexandra Kaye said...

Alec, ok. well idk. that;s jsut what i had in my notes but who knows?

Thanks for clearing that up madison.

And thanks you Kylie for clearing that up as well.

So the Hebrews were the first to have a monotheistic religion, judaism, but the phoenicians took the concept from them?

Nicole Gustafson said...

I thought brahma(n) is a universal spirit that is apart of everything, but is that just what you mean when classifying as a god?
but moksha is when you become one with brahma... the spirit..?
and a bhramin is a priest

Kylie Jayroe said...

Does anyone know the main characteristics of the Guptas? I totally forgot who they were!!

Alec Livaditis said...

Was the Pheonician's writing system Ceuniform?

Anonymous said...

Brahma is he world and he is the oe who connects us all, so isn't that the same thing..

Kell Watkins said...

i think nichole is right!! but we need mr prill for this 1!!!

Alec Livaditis said...

The Gupta dynasty was smaller than the Mauryan, but it was the most prosperous time for India. There was a bureacuracy and regions could do as they pleased. There was much trade and connecting of the silk roads.

What else?

Nicole Gustafson said...

right
awesome
thanks nidhi

Kell Watkins said...

alec i believe its that and phonics.. mr prill was talking about htem and how we got hooked on phonics

Kylie Jayroe said...

phoenicians writing system= alphabet(22 letters and no symbols for vowels)
Pg.49

Alexandra Kaye said...

The phonecians created phonics, and a 22 letter system if i am not mistaken and it was not the same thing as cuneiform, but then who created cuneitform?

So we can conclude that the Brahman is like the universal spirit and Brahmin is the priet.....whats a brahma?

Guptas were the second indian empire to unify india. They were like the Zhou's in China. They had given control to allies to different parts of the empire, cause it was too big too control. Founder was Chandra Gupta, (dont confuse with chandragupta maurya). They were sort of broken up and brought to an end by the White Huns, which were from some place near from where the aryans came from.

Kell Watkins said...

alec they expanded by marriage to the emporor would have his children marry to other "state" kings/rulers

Sumerians created cuneiform, they were from mesopotamia, their first writing system equals cuneiform..

Kell Watkins said...

alexandera i think thats the god but im not sure

tori_freedman said...

oops, well my post was a little late... yall posted a lot while i was reading it all. lol hope it helps a little though..?

Alexandra Kaye said...

Maurya came first, right? and then gupta.....like in china, Shang adn then zhou?

Anonymous said...

yah maurya was first then Gupta

Kylie Jayroe said...

sumerians(mesopotamians) created cuneiform.
quiz #1, question 5.

Anonymous said...

yep sumerians created cuneiform...

Alexandra Kaye said...

Thanks Kell. According to dictionary.com, you are correct. Ti says that brahma was like the god and creator. so that all makes sense now i think:

Brahmin: Priest
Brahma: God/creator in hinduism
Brahman: the universal spirit

Alec Livaditis said...

I know the purpose of writing in Mesopotamia was for records, but in China wasn't it for the mystic bone reading?

jessicafritz said...

hey so wait, moksha is like just a state of being...kind of like pergatory i guess...and then nirvana is like th hindu heaven?

Alexandra Kaye said...

you're right alec, it was for record in mesopotamia. However, i do remember Mr. Prill saying something about that...btu i don't remember, sorry. Did india or china have their own form of writing?

jessicafritz said...

omgsh Obama is a terrorist and McCain has a different plan from Bush.
Yea obama wants "change" i mean he doesn't even say the pledge of allegience!

Ankur Shah said...

I was reading the blog, and I noticed that some people decided to talk about Obama's “lack” of a plan to improve our nation. Now think about this people, do you really think that someone who is running for the President of the United States (and has the nomination of a major party) is so stupid as to make promises to improve our country without a plan? Do you think he would be supported by so many people? People don't like Obama because he is black, but because he represents CHANGE. McCain represents another 4 years of failed Bush policies that people are tired of. And Obama does have a plan, for all of the things he talks about. Take taxes for example, John McCain says (as stated directly in his ad campaign): "He [Obama] promises more taxes on small business, seniors, your life savings, your family. Painful taxes, hard choices for your budget. Not ready to lead. That's the real Obama." This is a complete and blatant LIE!!! Obama has stated that he is going to LOWER taxes for 95% of the American population. He wants NO INCOME TAX for seniors makings less than $50,000 a year. He's not going to raise the taxes of families making less than $250,000 a single dime. Yet McCain keeps on LYING about Obama's plans and WHINING about how he gets less attention. McCain wants to lower taxes on the large corporations in the country, benefiting those in the upper income bracket. Obama's more concerned on giving tax breaks to the people that really need it. People say they don't like Obama because he doesn't say how he is going to do things he talks about. He DOES. All of his ideas have a plan that go with them. Nobody is worried about McCain though, when he spends his time conjuring a personal smear campaign on Obama. In the beginning of the campaign, McCain asked for the campaign to be a "contest of ideas". Now he is doing whatever he can to lower Obama's popularity, including lying. McCain tries to use Obama's popularity in a bad way. Hillary Clinton tried that, and it didn't work for her either. There is nothing wrong in having a popular candidate for president, but McCain can't imagine a world in which the American people actually like their leader. Therefore, McCain continually lies about Obama's politics in media statements and ads, making the American public ignorant (no offense to anyone) about the election.

People are just following what everyone else says without actually paying mind to the election and each side’s proposed reforms. I am not trying to make anyone to pick any side...but I wish people would stop saying lies at the very least.

Nirvana is Buddhist, not hinduism, it is the point of enlightment, where you've gotten rid of all your desires, and you get out of reincarnation and are out of the world.Moksha is when you have perfectly finished your dharma and are ready to get out of your cycle of reincarnation, but in Moksha u are still with Brahma( the world) but now u r a part of brahma, and so u are just invisible to the human like Brahma is..does that make sense?

Alexandra Kaye said...

Ashoka.....was he the one who saw suffering and hated it? or was that someone else?

Alec Livaditis said...

nirvana is the ultimate reality of Buddhism. One reaches nirvana when he becomes enlightened

I'm pretty sure this question will be ont the test

The Philosophy of Confucius

A. formed a thoroughly practical and secular approach to life

What are your thoughts on this question I got it wrong I put C.

C. addressed abtruse philosophical questions

Kylie Jayroe said...

Moksha - Hindu concept of the salvation of the soul

Nirvana- Buddhist concept of a state of spiritual perfection and enlightenment in which distracting passions are eliminated.

Alexandra Kaye said...

Alec, is a the correct answer?

Alec Livaditis said...

yes A. is correct

jessicafritz said...

oh okay i understand thanks nidhi! :)

Alexandra Kaye said...

Alec, i think that A is correct....according to dictionary.com (again) it says that confucianism is "the system of ethics, education, and statesmanship taught by Confucius and his disciples, stressing love for humanity, ancestor worship, reverence for parents, and harmony in thought and conduct." and that seems practical, although, idk how it would be secular.....huh.

Alexandra Kaye said...

Ive gotta go. Good luck on the test tomorow. I hope i helped ya'll a little.

Kell Watkins said...

haha your welcome alexander... gotta go see yall l8r good luck on the test tomarrow

Kylie Jayroe said...

never mind about the question of why Ashoka converted to Buddhism...the answer is because....he was overwhelmed by the brutality of a particular military victory and decided to convert to Buddhism.

Alec Livaditis said...

I think I get it.

Instead of addressing issues like afterlife, divine forces, and such, Confucianism foccusses on how humans should act on Earth regardelss if there is a divine force or not.

Confucius said: A Wise man reveres the gods, but doe not get too close to them, (or something along that line)

Look, im personally not on anny side here but, people have their own opinions, Ankur..yeah Obama said he would lower taxes for 95% of the population, that just means that he's trying to help the poor people, by hurting the rich. The rich would have to pay more according to their position, so practically they dont have that much money left anyways. Shouldn't people work for their own money, whats the point of taking money from others. Some people just rely on the government for support and dont even try to work! That doesn't work here..look, this might just spoil the people of Am erica, cause they wouldn't wanna do much. it might seem good at first but it isn't always that good. i agree that people should stop trashing Obama, but its what they think about him. Instead of listening to the media they should try to listen to obama himself...

Kylie Jayroe said...

Good night to everyone that is getting off. Thank you for all the help, but if you have time in about 30 minutes i think Mr. Prill said he would be getting back home and getting on. So if you had any questions that werent answered, just ask him then!

Kell Watkins said...

hurting the rich are u serious u should read over what u said believe me raising the taxes for the rich is not gnna hurt them and alot of times they get that bck cause they own alot of the businesses

Anonymous said...

Ashoka was first very violent but then he converted to buddhism after seeing all the misery after the bloody battle of kalinga. it wassn't like right there that he decided to become buddhist, it was a sort of long process.

Kylie Jayroe said...

thank you nidhi!

Also, the importance of a having a beauracracy was so that the government didn't fall apart when the emporer died, like Qin Shi Handi, or however you spell it lol

And what are the major characteristics of Maurayan India?

Anonymous said...

who was han wudi and the major characteristics of the han dynasty

Anonymous said...

yeah well try being a rich person, and life as a rich person isn't that good, there are problems too,k? The rich aren't like the super rich. I'm talking about how the regular rich work..think about it..if the taxes go down for the others, then guess who's got to pay for it, the rich, and that just makes more money to pay. the taxes are based percentages so, it just means alot more to pay for. I see what u mean by the fact that they get back but still, don't you didn't people should work for their money? I mean ,some people really need the money cause they r in big trouble but alot just sit around thinking that they r gonna get payed without doing anything...im not trying to be against the whole idea, im just trying to think of it a different way..i wanted to say this (not being mean) my name is Nidhi, Kell, not nihidi..just saying..
