Tus Preguntas
Hey folks if you have questions regarding tomorrow's test, please feel free to use this area to discuss as usual. Don't be too nervous, most tend to do fairly well on this test as long as they did the week's document assignments and practice working with mapping this evening. But feel free to post here if you need to. Also, if you need another blank map to practice with, you can pull up a blank one by clicking here.

Hey Mr. Prill
Can a good idea also be transportation? Or can they be the same thing. Like Chinese junks being both a good idea and transportation.
Do the monsoons count as an environmental barrier?
Could you post the other documents, the ones we used to fill out the chart too.
no, don't double dip on transportation and ideas. monsoons, yes, count as environmental barriers. unfortunately i am not able to post the 32 docs because i'm not able to scan those.
mr prill can you put the map on the back of our study guide on here so we can print it out and practice drawing the trade routes on it?
i'll see if i can find it or something similar miss carroll. un momentito.
perhaps you can use this link?
http://www.islamproject.org/muhammad/Image6.gif
let me know if that's printable for you all, otherwise, i'll try to find another one. i'll put it as a link in my blogpost too.
ok thanks.
when i printed it it only printed the top part of africa...
nevermind i figured it out. you just have to go to print preview and turn it into a landscape and shrink it to 30%.
ok, cool. hopefully anyone that wants to will be able to do that. also, you could copy and paste it into a word document, put the page setup into landscape, and resize the map as need.
What did yall put for for Zimbabwe? I have that they were a middleman between the East African and West African trade, but what else?
that's the major thing mr. edwards, that zimbabwe's wealth comes from its intermediate position, taking trade to the coast from the interior (huge profits!). essentially its power comes from the Indian Ocenan like power comes from the Sahara for your Sudanic kingdoms. a second characteristic you may consider is that zimbabwe was also rather sophisticated. it was a city of stone towers, palaces, and public buildings.
what are some ideas/goods traded and where do i put them on the map?
i know that some are gold, salt, islam, and silk.. but im not sure exactly where to put them on the map..
and mr prill, say i put silk on the map in the silk roads, can i just put like a point on part of the silk roads trade route, and write silk on there? and then in the narrative paragraph, explain that the silk is being traded through out the entire silk road?
tons of goods and ideas, you only need five. i might add slaves, spices, cotton, and porcelian to your list just to name a few more. when you're mapping, plot it in their place of origin. (aka, not put silk in zimbabwe). simply plotting this items along the trade routes they cross is fine too.
on page 489, the trans-saharan trade routes.. is it the gray or the red arrows that's the trans saharan trade routes? the book says its the gray one, but is this the one that u said was wrong in the book, mr prill?
yeah, that map is wrong. again, the sahara is nowhere near the east coast of africa.
just flip it around
oh and to my previous question, so would it be right if i put gold and salt in west africa, silk in china, and gold also in mecca, islam in mecca, and islam also in south africa, and slaves in south africa?
are any of these incorrect for the ideas/goods being traded?
What exactly do we need to know about Ibn Battuta?
well, south africa remains largely untouched still. slaves and islam in EAST africa yes. i also wouldn't gold around mecca since that's not really the idea there. largely you're on the right track though miss moon.
Do we have to know about which way the monsoons went in each season? And for the indian ocean trade routes, do we have to know the routes that are in the indian ocean on the silk roads map?
so do we still need to know the 'sea' route of the silk roads? or just the land? and i still dont get what we have to write for the paragraph thingy...
miss fritz, the main thing on ibn battuta is the point of his writings- the demonstrate how dar al-islam was a culturally unifying force in a diverse world. additionally, be able to draw in some examples in your explanation.
mr. johnson, the indian ocean routes on the silk roads map are outdated by the time we get to the post-classical period, when that system becomes much more complex. the silk roads largely stayed the same though, so just concentrate on the orange overland routes there.
the "paragraph thingy" is your narrative explaining activity on the map- i.e. how trade and islam were the two major engines behind post-classical globalization.
Will we have to talk a lot about southernization?
you will need to at least include the idea in your paragraph map narrative.
One more thing, how accurately do we have to know the routes? Do we have to show every time the line goes to land?
it needs to be as accurate and specific as possible.
so we include the sea route of the silk road as well?
again, just concentrate on the overland route. you're including the indian ocean basin, of course, in your map, which goes way beyond the old sea lanes of the classical period.
i have to step out for a little while, but of course this area will remain open.
k
The 5 zones that we talked about today... will we have to know them? I mean like include them in our maps.
thank so much mr prill for all your help!
What was significant about swahili??
ms. hatchell, those five zones collectively make up the indian ocean trade basin. so yes, that is the indian ocean network. ok, now i'm out for real.
what do we have to know about the age groups? what is that asking for?
What would be a title? Like, "The trade routes of the post-classical era"?
And for whoever asked about if we have to write the months for the monsoon winds, in class Prill told us that we did.
what exactly IS southernization? Cooah Ellwanger said he hadn't heard that term before, and since he wasn't there today, i couldn't ask about it.
I have so many tests tomorrow! but i know this map like the back of my hand..i think. For my "thesis" ill put Globilization through the postcalssical by the eurasian trade network. that seems okay...right?
Also what did you think about musa's effect on timbuktu and mali?
All i can think of is that he took it much more seriously and built mosques and brought back islamic scholars and architects
southernization is basically westernization , but going south lol. remember that without southernization, there is no westernization.
hello
mr prill u told us 4 natural barriers......do we need to know 5?
thanks. and what do we need a thesis for? Coach E mentioned it, but i'm not sure what it's for...
Sarah, it's like how south asia effected the rest of the world, and with out south asia the west, England and such, wouldn't have been able to become a world power.
oh wait, so does the age groups have to do with the stateless society? like how everyone had their own part or chore?
.. i think i just answered my own question. :]
we need to know 4 cause he said four for us too. And thesis statement is going to be like a 'title' for our maps.
oh ok. thank you(:
okeydokey :] thx
"Southernization" basically refers to the flow of ideas and advanced technology coming from the South (mostly the Indian Ocean rim) and spreading to other civilizations. Lynda Shaffer, the person that came up with this idea, believes that southernization sets the basis for westernization later on.
which trade route was mostly slave trading?
When you map things on the map do you use like a key or just dots and lable them? the trade of gold is in east Africa right?
we include in our map the following:
The Indian Ocean Trade Basin, The Trans-Saharan Routes, and the Silk Roads
5 major cities (spread out)
5 goods/ideas spread
3 methods of transportation
4 environmental barriers
and we need to make sure our maps MAKE A POINT! (this includes thesis/title)
East africa was mostly slave trading. Gold was from north west africa i think
How long is our title suppose to be if it's also the thesis...?
do your guys' maps have Baghdad on the silk road? I can't tell from the map in the book.
can we pick any 5 cities or do they have to be a range of certain ones?
it can be any five, but its better to have them in different parts of the map.
ankur, i think prill said baghdad was involved with the indian ocean network.. but i think it could kindof be both. not sure though..
ohh. thankss<3
baghdad is not exactly on the silk road, but slightly above it. and about the cities thing. prill said to name important cities, but spread them out. (ex: dont name all of your five cities along the East African coast. have one there, a couple in china, trans-saharan, etc.)
So for Zimabwe do we just need to know that it linkede east and west African trade and that is was pretty advanced compared o other African societies or is there more I'm forgetting?
I have a question...How did Mansa Musa's effect Timbuktu?
when mansa musa came back from his hajj, he brought back religious people, and like church architecture to make the mainly commercial timbuktu into a religious islamic timbuktu... which in return helped for business, and also helped politically.
Hello,
Whatz Sundiata?
3 methods of transportation are camel, boat, and horse?
I guess horse could be one...
yes, but u should be specific, such as Bactrian Camels (long hair) and Dromedary Camels (short hair) and Chinese Junks (ships) and Arab Dhows (ships)
Can someone explain what sundiata is..please?
akshay i cant tell if your asking or telling but either way make sure ur spasiffic for ex. (1Dromedary-short haired Camel [saharah desert] 2Bactrain-long haired camel [silk roads] 3 Chinese Junk-Boats [more so open sea] 4 Arab Dhow-Boat [mostly hugging the coasts 1 sail]
i dont remember mr. p sayn nethng bout ages but if he did wat was it?!?!
sundiata was the founder of the mali empire miss patel. 'tis in your text.
Thank you, Mr.prill!
wow ok. i just read every comment on here and it helped some. i feel really lost right now though. haha.
soo. what are the actual questions going to ne over tomorrow?
you said sub-saharan africa but? like, what about it mainly?
where was cotton traded?
and can anyone tell me about bantu migrations?
I REALLY WISH I HADN'T MISSED THE FIRST DAY OF THIS UNIT THING haha
for the paragraph, do we just tell you what the drawings and the lines on the map mean?
cotton was grown in India, so it was the main source for cotten.
essentially. i'll have a few points i'll tell you that you need to make sure to include, for example, the role of islam in this system.
bantu migrations they moved south because of population pressures.
you can see a map of the migrations on pg 81
so the role of islam in the system is that it unified the whole dar-al- islam, and people converted to islam for trade?
essentially.
Thank yall! =]
Good luck on yall's test tomorrow.
Sapp
totally irrelevant...but i could definitely see prill as being a sufi...with all of his answers like "essentially" etc. hahaha idk...
if this teaching gig doesn't work out, mr. douglas, i may have to consider being a traveling sufi. hmm... interesting proposition.
and then an awkward silence falls over the crowd...
aw man mr. P i c u as being more so a gatoraid pramoter lol jp but ya i cud c that 2 but urll have to wrk on spitting wen u tlk lol jp
well i guesse i better go get in the shower now so best of luck 2 every1 thanx 4 posting and good night!!!!!!!:D
haha..
do we have to be able to tell the importance of the traded goods that we write or just know them?
you'll talk about their importance perhaps in your paragraph narrative.
You should probably know the impacts of the goods or ideas traded (ex: Islam or slaves) because there might be a question on it or you might want to talk about it in your paragraph about the map.
lol. Mr. Prill and I posted same thing at same time!
Whats important about Ife? is everything that's on the study guide gonna be on the test?
ife is a city you could plot in west africa. but honestly, you've got plenty of other (and better) options.
and this is where i say goodnight folks. i need some shuteye. gracias por tus preguntas.
oh..ok..yeah i've already gotten better cities, so all the geographical things on the study guide are just to give us things to think about for the map? so i dont have to worry too much abot them right? Also, do we have to draw pictures for each thing, so we cant label them on the map, and we have to make a key?
Never mind.. i guess im too late..well good night peoples, if there is anyone here..
you can do whatever you feel most comfortable with. no rules on that. cheers!
no problemo! denada! gracias para contestarles!!!!;p choa hasta manana!!!
Mr Prill did you talk about something about "AGES" in 7th period??? I don't remember!!!!:( what do we need to know about it??!?!?!??
do you want us to lable the five zones of the indian ocean basin or was that just to help us remember it
julia are you talking about age groups?
paco the fivezones collectively make up the indian ocean trade basin. so yes you should label them and i dont remember him sayn nethng about ages either!!!
oh okay. thx
yep no prob oh ya ps that is the indian ocean network. but ya im gon 4 real now so night buena suerte every1
what area would you put the chinese junks? i mean because the silk road is mostly on land..
Tereasa i guess you could put them south of china? i unno... good question.
i screwed up your name big time.. -_-
lol. thanks..but grr. i wanna know.
and do you know what were kinship groups?
Chinese junks were in the Indian ocean used for long distance trade and Arab dhows were used for coastal trade(?)
sureee...lets go with that..thanks
hey guys thamks i read the comments and all the questions i had were answerd but mr prill do we have to spell every thing correct
well, i did GREAT on th map...not so much on the short answer questions. i thin i did fine tho... can u do test corections on this style of test?
Using the blog as a study group was a great idea. thanks for the questions and answers, i think i did better then i thought i would
